In keeping with the vacation/beach/relaxing theme I seem to have going on this week, I thought it would be fun to talk about beach-bag-must-haves. Here’s what I always have with me when I’m out in the sun.
I technically have a Pool Bag, not a Beach Bag. But I call it a Beach Bag because Pool Bag sounds weird. Right?
Anyway, I got mine from TJ Maxx. It was one of those things they having hanging up, lining the path to the cash register. As it was super cheap and I am a sucker for all things British, I bought it. That was two summers ago – so this is the third summer I’ve used it – and it still looks great. It’s made of kind of a burlapy fabric with padded cotton handles. It’s huge, so when we all head down to the pool I can carry everyone’s stuff.
First and most important for any water-based activity is obviously a towel. Mine was a gift and features the exploding TARDIS from Doctor Who. If you do not know what these words mean, I suggest you get on Netflix and start watching immediately. Your life will never be the same. I’m not kidding.
I also always have at least two books with me. They’re usually different – the ones I had today are a nonfiction (For All the Tea in China: How England Stole the World’s Favorite Drink and Changed History) and a memoir that reads like fiction (Bright Lights, Big Ass). These also have the benefit of being a new book and a reread, respectively. So whatever I’m in the mood for, I’m covered.
Water bottle, obviously. Hydration is very important, especially while you’re out in the sun. This sunscreen is the special stuff I use on my tattoo. I put sunscreen on my arms and face and everything before we go outside, but I regularly reapply on my tattoo to prevent fading from sun exposure and, you know, melanoma (if you get one under the ink and don’t notice it, you’re in big trouble). The Aveeno kind has the benefit of being a lotion, too, which is nice. Usually I get the 70 SPF, but this one came free with another bottle of regular lotion. And, of course, a snack. Today it’s an Udi’s blueberry muffin. These are seriously good – they look like real bakery muffins and taste amazing. But I often have a gluten free Go Picnic snack box stashed in there – they’re shelf stable, don’t go bad in the sun, and are actually pretty delicious. My Target started carrying them this summer and I’ve quickly become addicted to the thought of a pre-packed, ready to eat, gluten free, healthy meal. Who wouldn’t, right? They have a ton of options, but this one is my favorite. Just be sure to check the front of the box, because they make non-GF ones, too.
You might also have spied these assorted goods in there: goggles, headphones, a plastic bag full of quarters for the vending machines, and my keys. And of course, not pictured because I was using the camera, my phone.
What do you keep in your pool/beach bag? If you don’t have one, what are your summertime vacation necessities? Do you have a TARDIS towel???
